Coulthard finds similarities in the personalities of Verstappen, Schumacher and Senna

Former Red Bull and McLaren driver David Coulthard has said 2021 world champion Max Verstappen is in the same mold as former F1 greats Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. He revealed that the Dutch driver split views in the same way as seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher and the late great Ayrton Senna.
“He’s an extraordinary human being, an extraordinary athlete. He’s brilliant and divisive. Who else do we know he’s brilliant and divisive? Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, to name a few. So few are capable of doing that. Lewis In fairness, he’s been able to win an amazing amount of championships in a very clean way. He doesn’t really have a lot of controversy,” the Scotsman compared him to Schumacher, Senna and even Hamilton. Said of Verstappen.
“With the strength of Mercedes and Lewis, Max has arguably had to come up with a different approach. His approach is, whenever a door is partially open, he will go for it. And Lewis has to keep opening the door because he knows he’s coming and it’s in Lewis’ psyche,” Coulthard said.
Coulthard was a test driver for Senna and competed against Schumacher and Verstappen’s father.
Coulthard revealed that Verstappen’s talent was undeniable, but added that he had to upstage Hamilton and Mercedes because the pair have been so dominant in the sport’s turbo-hybrid era. It was neither Ferrari nor Red Bull able to do this with both a driver and team combination.
“He’s not afraid of anyone. It’s not part of his psyche. The thing I find most impressive, if there’s a difference, is that he goes for it. No doubt about it. When I was running, I Used to weigh in. ‘Should I risk it now, shouldn’t I risk it’. He just goes for it. It’s actually quite special,” the Scotsman revealed.

Verstappen and Hamilton collided several times on the track during the Titanic title fight in 2021. The two were tied for points leading into the season finale, where Verstappen overtook Hamilton in the last lap of the race after the Briton was largely dominated.
