New Delhi:

At the site of a farmers’ protest on the Singhu border this morning, the body of a youth – with his left wrist amputated and bloodied on the ground – was found tied to an inverted police barricade.

“Today at around 5 am, a dead body was found with arms, legs chopped off (closed) at the place where farmers’ protest is going on (in Kundli, Sonepat). Who is responsible (and) FIR registered against unknown There is no information on the person. The viral video is the subject of investigation… the rumours will continue to go on,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Hansraj was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Preliminary reports say that the Nihangs – a ‘warrior’ Sikh group – are being blamed for the brutal and ill-fated murder at Kundli in Haryana’s Sonepat district.

A video has surfaced showing a group of Nihangs standing over the man – after his wrist is severed and he is bleeding on the ground, his eyes gleaming from shock and pain.

Nihangs, some of whom are carrying spears and are standing around his body, can be heard demanding the man to give his name and native village. None of the men in the video take any steps to help the man or get involved in the horrific wound.

Another video showed the man’s body hanging upside down from a rope – his left arm covered in blood – and a pool of blood on the floor.

Reports say the youth was beaten to death by Nihangs for allegedly desecrating the Sikh holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib – which is yet to be identified.

They allegedly thrashed her to death, hung the body on police barricades and then slit her wrist.

Sonepat police have taken the body to the Civil Hospital.

The United Kisan Morcha, which is among those leading the protest, will meet in the afternoon to discuss the incident and issue a statement.

Last year there was another incident related to Nihangs – The hand of a soldier from Punjab was chopped off With Talwar in Patiala when he asked her to show him her ‘movement pass’ during the covid lockdown.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjeet Singh recovered after extensive surgical procedures and has since been promoted. Three other policemen who were injured were awarded medals.

Farmers have gathered in Singhu (on the Delhi border) for over a year to protest the Centre’s new agricultural laws; Several farmer camps have been set up along the border in the past months.

Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar was on his way to Sonipat this week to attend a public function.

However, after continued protests from farmers (who have made it clear that they would oppose any public appearance by any member of the ruling BJP), Mr Khattar withdrew and sent a replacement.

Farmers’ protests in Haryana have made major headlines since the start of the movement, often leading to violent clashes between protesters and the police. Views of cantonment forces from both sides – divided by barricades, dug roads and other material used to block progress have been widely shared.

Tension escalated in August when a top Karnal official was caught on camera ordering the police to “behead their (farmers)”. It was during a lathi charge in which 10 farmers were injured.

The officer – Ayush Sinha – was removed from his post and sent on leave, and an inquiry was ordered.
