The Navy has kept a close eye watch over extra regional forces present in the region including PLA units, be it warships, or research vessels, Navy Chief Adm Dinesh Tripathi said in a press conference on Monday (December 2, 2024), ahead of Navy Day celebrations which will take place on December 4, 2024.
Mr. Tripathi apprised about the Navy’s expansion plans, pointing out that currently 62 ships and one submarine are under construction at various shipyards. “On an average, one ship will be induced every month next year,” he added.

In response to a question from The Hindu, the Navy chief informed that deals for Rafale-M jets and three additional Scorpenes submarines are in advanced stages. “We should be able to sign both the Rafale-M and three Scorpenes deal by next month [January 2025].”
“In 2024 we concurrently had one ship at RIMPAC exercise and another in Russia that demonstrated our reach, sustenance, acceptability and operational logistics capability,” Mr. Tripathi said.
Acknowledging the Submairne Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) test recently from nuclear submarine (SSBN) INS Arighat, the Navy Chief said: “We did carry out test of missile, it was without a warhead. Launch was successful. Concerned agencies are examining as to what trajectory the missile took.”
Further speaking on nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), Mr. Tripathi added that the first one (INS Arihant) had a number of deterrence patrols, whereas the second (INS Arighat) just got commissioned and it is undergoing trials including the missile test.
Mr. Tripathi also remarked on the “surprise growth of Pakistan Navy”
“They are looking to become a 50 ships Navy… Surprising given its economy, how Pakistan is getting so many warships. Obviously they choose weapons to welfare. Good luck to them,” he said.
