Chennai Super Kings (CSK) resumed their Indian Premier League 2021 campaign with a convincing 20-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Dubai on Sunday. It was not a cakewalk for M S Dhoni And as their team they found themselves in trouble at 7/3 and then 24/4 after opting to bat first.
Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 88 and a scintillating cameo from Dwayne Bravo proved him overall beyond MI’s reach.
Batting first, the CSK batsmen failed to do well in the beginning. However, Gaikwad’s scintillating 88* off 58 balls, which included nine fours and four sixes, helped CSK recover from a batting collapse. Ravindra Jadeja’s crucial 26 (in 33 balls) added 81 runs for the fifth wicket with Gaikwad. Bravo’s 23 off eight balls, which included three big sixes, saw CSK post a total of 156/6.
Bravo continued his winning run in the IPL with the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League. Bravo first sent Adam Milne in the cover area for a maximum in the 17th over. In the next over, he messed up Trent Boult’s bowling figures with Gaekwad hitting two big sixes in back-to-back deliveries while Gaikwad hit a boundary.
Bravo’s power hitting not only entertained the fans but also his own teammates. CSK’s Deepak Chahar, sitting in the dressing room, was seen whistling after a shot from Bravo.
A fan shared a short video clip of Bravo’s sixes and Chahar’s celebration.
MI started their innings well but Chahar quickly removed openers Quinton de Kock and Anmolpreet Singh. Stand-in captain Kieron Pollard tried to add some runs but Josh Hazlewood bundled him out for 15. Saurabh Tiwary tried to keep the hunt going with an unbeaten half-century, but he ran out of the over.
Bravo picked up two wickets in the final overs and kept MI at 136/8 in 20 overs.
