According to government data, the omicron version of the coronavirus has been found in 79 per cent of the samples taken from Delhi between January 1 and January 23.
The delta variant, which triggered a brutal second wave of COVID-19 infections in April and May last year, was found in 13.70 per cent of the 2,503 samples sequenced during this period.
The data showed that of the 863 samples sequenced between December 25 and December 31, about 50 percent (433) contained the omicron, while 34 percent (293) had the delta variant.
According to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), across India, omicrons accounted for 75 per cent of the total samples sequenced in January.
Delhi reported its first case on December 5 of Omicron – a 37-year-old fully vaccinated man who had come from Tanzania.
According to experts, mild symptoms, faster recovery and fewer deaths typified the Omicron-driven third wave of the pandemic in the country and fewer patients required medical care in hospitals.
Also, unlike the second wave operated by Delta, this time Covid has not been the primary cause of most deaths.
