Delhi government will reimburse the fees of students even if they are enrolled in unlisted institutions

Delhi government has decided to reimburse the fees of meritorious students eligible to avail the benefits of Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana even if they are directly enrolled in renowned coaching institutes which are not empaneled with it, Delhi Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam said on Tuesday. He told reporters that around 15,000 students have enrolled themselves under the scheme and physics classes will start soon for them in government empaneled coaching institutes.

The Social Welfare Minister also reiterated that the scheme, which was stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been opened to all categories of students and not just those belonging to SC, ST or OBC categories, as envisioned earlier. The announcement has been made ahead of the Delhi civic polls to be held next year. The decision to launch this scheme was taken a few years back.

Under this scheme, meritorious students from SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories will get free coaching from private institutes to prepare for competitive exams. Gautam said that 46 coaching institutes are under the Delhi government’s empaneled under the scheme.

However, some big institutions including well-known names in this field did not participate in the scheme. “Even after our request, they did not come,” the minister said. “Therefore, we made another provision. Now if a student takes direct admission in an institute which is not empaneled, we will reimburse their fees.

Gautam said that a student belonging to a family, whose combined annual income is Rs 8 lakh or less, is eligible to apply for Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana. “The Delhi government works for the welfare of the people, and poverty will not be a deterrent to talent, because through this scheme, able students can achieve their dreams of qualifying for engineering, medical, law and civil services examinations. can do whatever they want. to do,” he said.

Gautam said that initially only 5,000 students were to be covered under the scheme, but later it was increased to 15,000. “And, I am happy to inform that around 15,000 students have enrolled under this scheme. Coaching institutes have gradually reopened, and the admission process is underway, and classes should start in the next 10-15 days,” he said.

Gautam said another problem was identified that even after the provision of financial aid, it is possible that students may spend Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 on commuting between home and a coaching institute, which is far away. may be located. “If they do not have money, will they be able to attend classes? To tackle this problem, we decided to offer a stipend of Rs 2,500 per month, so that one can pay the travel fare and spend the rest of the money on books and stationery.

Other eligibility criteria are that students must have passed Class 10 and 12 from schools in Delhi, and meet the eligibility criteria for the specific competitive examination, the social welfare department said in a statement later. It added that the list of empaneled coaching institutes along with the number of seats allotted is available on the website of the social welfare department of the city government.

The applications of students applying directly to unlisted institutions will be scrutinized by the department and all eligible students will be allowed to take coaching from unlisted institutions of their choice, subject to the availability of seats, the statement said. .
