Delhi: How major central universities changed UG admission process after CUET

This year, the admission process in universities has changed as they have adopted Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission in UG courses. While Delhi University earlier used to admit students on the basis of 12th class marks, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University had separate entrance exams for admission to UG courses.

Abandoning the age-old practices of admitting students, universities have partially or fully adopted CUET from the academic session 2022-23.

Let’s take a look at how the admission process in these universities is going.

In Delhi University, 79 UG programs are taking place in 67 colleges, departments and centers of the university.

The university had earlier this month launched an online platform for taking admission through Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS)-2022. The admission process which started from September 12 is being conducted in three phases: first stage is to apply to the university, second stage is to fill preference and third stage is seat allotment-cum-admission. At present, the work of the second and third phases is going on.

The first phase started on 12 September and the second phase started on 26 September. However, both the phases will remain open till October 10.

CUET scores are required in the second stage. The university had earlier announced that the university would consider the subject-based normalized marks declared by the NTA in the CUET (UG)-2022 scorecard of the candidates.

The programme-specific qualifying score will be automatically calculated by the University as per the eligibility criteria and the candidate will have to confirm his/her scores before giving preference.

After the closure of the preference filling stage (2nd stage), the university will issue a mock list of provisional allotment based on the CSAS-2022 allotment policy.

The ‘Allotted Seat’ refers to a unique combination of ‘Program College’. For example, a BA (Hons) in Psychology in College X is said to have an ‘allocated seat’.

Once a seat is allotted in a particular round, the candidate has to ‘accept’ the seat before the specified last date/time for the given allotment round.

The concerned college will then check the eligibility and documents uploaded by the candidate. Once the college approved, the candidate has to pay the admission fee.

Based on the availability of seats arising due to rejection, cancellation and withdrawal, Delhi University may announce multiple allotment rounds. The university will display the vacant seats on its admission website before each allotment round.

In Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), about 10 UG courses, mostly BA (Hons) in foreign languages, and a total of 342 seats are offered in various schools and subjects.

This year admission to BA (Hons) in Foreign Languages, BSc-MSc Integrated Program in Ayurveda Biology and Certificate of Proficiency Programs for the academic year 2022-23 is being done through CUET (UG) 2022.

JNU had started the registration process on September 28 for admission to its undergraduate programs through CUET. The nominations will close on October 12.

The first merit list for admission will be published on October 17, the university officials had said. Students will get three days to block their seats.

The second list will be released on October 22 and candidates can block their seats from October 22 to 24. Meanwhile, the third and additional list will be announced on October 27.

In the first week of November the students who have held their seats will come to the university for physical verification.

The first semester of undergraduate students in JNU will start from November 7.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is taking admission in just 10 undergraduate courses through CUET, unlike Delhi University.

In August, Jamia opened a registration portal for candidates seeking admission to these courses. The registration process concluded last week.

The 10 courses are: BA (Hons) Turkish Language and Literature, BA (Hons) Sanskrit, BA (Hons) French and Francophone Studies, BA (Hons) Spanish and Latin American Studies, BA (Hons) History, BA (Hons) Hindi, BA (Hons) Economics, BSc Biotechnology, BVOC (Solar Energy), and BSc (Hons) Physics.

A university official said that the university is planning to announce the merit list next week.

If the seats in the first list remain vacant, the next list will be announced. Selected students will be given three days to submit fees and documents.

Even BR Ambedkar University of Delhi government will admit students in 18 UG programs through CUET. The university offers a total of 19 UG courses and admission to only one UG program will be through the Common Management Admission Committee (CMAC).

Ambedkar University is offering admission to a total of 2,522 seats with a break up of 1,123 (UG) and 1,399 (PG) programs respectively.

The university has started the registration process for the UG programs offered through CUET 2022 in mid-September. Interested candidates can fill and submit the application form for UG till 12 October.

The tentative date for the first cut-off has been announced as October 18.
