Addressing concerns over ‘low’ COVID testing in the national capital, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Sunday said the diagnostic tests being conducted in the city are three times the number recommended by the ICMR. Those who have to undergo tests are being tested, he said.

As per the new guidelines of the Centre, asymptomatic patients need not undergo the test. Also, contacts of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients do not require testing unless they have co-morbidities or are above 60 years of age.

Jain said that these new guidelines on testing have come about after careful consideration.

Delhi conducted 67,624 Tests on Friday and 79,578 on Thursday.

The city on Thursday reported 28,867 COVID-19 cases, the sharpest single-day spike since the start of the pandemic after 98,832 tests were conducted in the city on Wednesday.

Jain told reporters that Delhi is expected to register 17,000 Covid cases on Sunday.

He said, “Hospital admissions have stopped and the positivity rate of COVID will also come down. The Delhi government’s restrictions have affected the spread of COVID-19. It will take three to four days before we review the restrictions. Will monitor the situation till then.”

On Saturday, Jain had said that the national capital seems to have reached its peak in COVID-19 infections and the government will look at easing restrictions when the daily cases come down to 15,000.

According to health department data, Delhi on Saturday reported 20,718 COVID-19 cases and 30 fatalities, while the positivity rate stood at 30.64 per cent.
