Delhi Mayor Election 2023: Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) candidate Shelly Oberoi has been unanimously elected as the Mayor of Delhi MCD after Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination.

Mayor’s election is to be held in Delhi today (April 26). It was a direct contest between incumbent Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shikha Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The polling was to be held at the Civic Center, the headquarters of the MCD.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is the ruling party in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Oberoi was elected mayor of Delhi in a fourth attempt on 22 February after the earlier elections were stalled amid an uproar over voting rights for nominated members. He defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 150 votes to 34 votes. Gupta got 116 votes out of the total 266 votes polled.

The post of mayor in the national capital sees five single-year terms on a rotational basis with the first year reserved for women, the third for reserved category and the remaining two open again.

The city gets a new mayor after the end of the fiscal year. Official sources said on 3 April that the incumbent Oberoi would hold office till a new mayor was elected.

Faces of Aam Aadmi Party:

After AAP’s Oberoi and Aale Mohammad Iqbal filed their nominations for the second consecutive term for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor respectively earlier this month, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party expressed confidence that its candidates are set to win.

As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are to be elected in the very first session of the House after the civic elections.

The civic polls, held on December 4 last year, were the first after three corporations were integrated into the MCD and a fresh delimitation exercise was carried out, in which the number of wards was reduced from 272 in 2012 to 250.

AAP had emerged victorious in the high-stakes election.

The amalgamation of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 wards) took place last year, the notification of which was issued in May 2022.
