Delhi University sets up control rooms in colleges for ‘safety and security’ during Holi

Delhi University (DU) has announced that it will celebrate Holi this year and to ensure safety and security in the campus, steps have been taken for internal and external security arrangements in the campus, hostels and colleges. “The steps have been taken to counter any possible act of hooliganism or riotous conduct in the name of Holi, especially those targeting female students,” the university said in an official notice.

DU has set up a joint control room in the North and South campuses of the university. Mobile patrolling will also be ensured by the university’s security staff and law enforcement officials around the campus. Moreover, Section 144 of CrPC has already been imposed by the law enforcement authorities due to COVID-19. Along with this, wearing masks and following the guidelines has been made mandatory. DU further said that senior police officers have also assured full cooperation.

“Strict disciplinary action will be taken to prevent any kind of hooliganism and disturbances during Holi under the provisions of the University Statues and Ordinances. This is to ensure the sense of safety and security so that the feeling and honor of any student and staff is not hurt during the festival of Holi.”

Holi celebrations last for about a week. It will be celebrated on March 18 this year. DU says, “However, the celebrations associated with Holi go on throughout the week and are reflected in the “Holi mood”. In addition, in coordination with law and order officials, the Proctorial Board, Dean Student Welfare Office and security personnel, the University It has said that it will maintain strict vigil and enforce discipline so that nothing untoward happens during the festivities.

Earlier in 2018, some girl students of DU’s Lady Shri Ram College were hit with semen-filled balloons. Several students had taken to social media remembering the incident and the lousy behavior during the festivities. Tolino Chishi, an LSR student, described the incident on Instagram, saying, “I didn’t know what semen was, I found out today. My kurti tells a story.”
