According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), with 19 days left in September, Delhi received the highest rainfall for September in 77 years.
This is the second highest rainfall in 121 years in the month of September. According to the IMD, the city has so far received 380.2 mm of rain in September this year, and the highest was 417.3 mm in 1944.
Rainfall in Delhi reached record level as the city received 94.7 mm of rain in 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday to Saturday. More rain is expected on Sunday. It is already, with few days left to go, the hottest monsoon season in Delhi in 46 years.
It rained for the rest of Saturday as well and 39.8 mm of rain was recorded from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.
Till 2.30 pm on Saturday, the city had received 1,136.8 mm of rain this monsoon.
According to the IMD, in 1975, there was 1,155.6 mm of rainfall during the entire monsoon, and the highest was 1,420.3 mm in 1933.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for the capital on Sunday when the sky will remain cloudy and moderate rain has been predicted. Light rain and cloudy skies are expected for the next week as well.
The maximum temperature on Saturday was 26.8 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal for this time of the year, and the minimum temperature was 24 degrees Celsius, a notch below the expected level.
