Delhi’s private schools can’t ask parents to buy books, uniforms from specific places: Sisodia

After the Punjab government, now the Aam Aadmi Party-led government in Delhi has asked schools not to stop parents from buying school uniforms, books, stationery and other essential items from restricted places. Instead, the national capital government has asked private and unaided schools to list at least five shots from where parents can buy essentials for their children. These rules were announced by Delhi Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who said that strict action would be taken against those schools which would not follow the norms.

The AAP government, in a public notice, said parents have a right to get proper information not only about class-wise list of books, written material as well as specifications of uniforms, but also a wide choice of sources, to buy. There are places too. That parents should have “the freedom to buy such books, stationery and uniforms from any place of their choice.”

A A similar decision was earlier announced by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, who is the first head of any state outside Delhi from AAP.

As per the rules, schools can no longer compel parents or students to buy books, stationery, uniforms from any selected vendor. It was a common place by many private schools in the National Capital Region.

Schools have been asked to display in advance the list of books, stationery items introduced in the upcoming session. Schools have also been asked to mention the specifications of the uniform accordingly

The official notice by Delhi government read, “Private unaided recognized schools in Delhi run either by Society or Trust as a charitable organization on no profit loss basis, thus profiting and commercializing any school activity There should be no room for that.”
