Chennai:

A 29-year-old doctor set ablaze his Mercedes car in Tamil Nadu’s Kancheepuram district on Thursday, allegedly over a failed relationship.

Investigators say the doctor was under depression after his relationship with his girlfriend, a classmate at a private medical college in Kanchipuram, ended some years ago. He was reportedly undergoing rehabilitation therapy to treat his depression.

Police suspect that after setting the vehicle on fire, the doctor was trying to end his life by sitting inside the vehicle. “He chose the same spot near a pond where the couple used to spend time. He did not come out of the burning car for some time,” a senior police officer told NDTV.

Police said the woman was not with him in the car. “We traced her number and ensured that she was safe. She was not present with him,” the police officer said.

The doctor’s family lives in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. His father is a renowned traditional bone setter of the region.
