According to the Drik Panchang, Dev Diwali is being celebrated today i.e. on Monday, November 7. It is celebrated in the holy city of Varanasi.

Dev Diwali 2022: While Diwali is known as the festival of lights, Dev Diwali is popularly referred to as the ‘Diwali of the Gods’. Usually celebrated around 15 days after Diwali, this year Dev Diwali is being celebrated today, Monday, November 7 according to the Drik Panchang. It is celebrated in the holy city of Varanasi, which is one of the oldest and most sacred cities in the world.

While there are many differences between the two festivals, mythology suggests that Dev Diwali marks the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasur.

On Dev Diwali, devotees take a holy dip in the Ganges on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima and light earthen lamps in the evening. Pilgrims also donate rice or lentils (Annadan), as donating food is considered a good deed. They also believe that taking a dip in the Ganges on this day washes away their sins and brings prosperity to their lives.

Difference between Diwali and Dev Diwali

  1. Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya or new moon day, whereas Dev Diwali is celebrated on Poornima or Poornima day. Thus, the celebration takes place 15 days after Diwali.
  2. Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana while Lord Shiva is worshiped on Dev Diwali. Devotees celebrate the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura.
  3. Diwali is also known as the festival of lights while Dev Dev Diwali is also known as Tripuraotsav or Tripurari Poornima.
  4. Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped during Diwali, and it is said that the lighting of diyas dispels all darkness. In comparison, it is believed that taking a dip in the holy waters of the Ganges washes away one’s sins and brings prosperity to the deity Diwali.
  5. While houses, shops and other areas are illuminated with colors on Diwali, on Dev Diwali, the temples and ghats of Varanasi are covered with earthen lamps.
  6. While Diwali is celebrated for five days across the country, Dev Diwali is celebrated in Varanasi more than anywhere else. Tourists especially come here to experience and participate in the celebrations.
