India’s ‘Missile Man’ is heading to the silver screen, with National Award-winning actor Dhanush set to portray former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in a sweeping biopic titled Kalam: The Missile Man of India. The film was officially announced at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Adipurush filmmaker Om Raut and produced by Abhishek Agarwal (of The Kashmir Files) and Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, the film will also feature a screenplay is penned by Saiwyn Quadras, known for critically acclaimed biopics like Neerja and Maidaan.
The film will trace Dr. Kalam’s extraordinary journey — from his humble roots in Rameswaram to his pioneering work in India’s missile programs, and ultimately, his tenure as the 11th President of India. Inspired by his bestselling memoir Wings of Fire, the story aims to explore the scientist and statesman, but also the poet, teacher, and philosopher.
“In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness,” said director Om Raut. “To bring his story to the screen is both an artistic challenge and a cultural responsibility.”
Producer Abhishek Agarwal called the project “an emotional moment,” adding, “We are privileged to tell this story, and each of us is giving our best to bring to life the journey of our true Bharat Ratna Kalam ji.” Bhushan Kumar echoed the sentiment: “This is more than just a film — it’s a tribute to a man who showed us how dreams, dedication, and humility can shape a nation’s future.”
