Dibrugarh: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal India on Tuesday said that India can develop strong trade ties with neighboring countries through optimum and holistic development of its waterways.
Speaking at the inaugural session of Waterways Conference-2022 DibrugarhSonowal invites industry leaders to actively partner with the government in the waterways sector and contribute to the Prime Minister Narendra ModiAtmanirbhar’s vision of India. “Within a radius of 2,000 km, we have all the big cities with a combined population of 800 million. Waterways can provide the biggest opportunity for our young entrepreneurs,” Sonowal said.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state is implementing the Rs 770 crore Assam Inland Water Transport Project to provide safe and convenient ferry services to the passengers. “Regular movement of cargo through waterways will create employment opportunities and open up international markets for local products through cost-effective transportation,” he said.
Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari Waterways are the most cost-effective means of transport as compared to roads and railways.
