former director of IIT-Gandhinagar and Earthquake Engineering scholar, Prof. Sudhir K Jain has now taken over as the 28th Vice-Chancellor (VC). Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Friday. The notification of his appointment came in November 2021, with the 62-year-old taking over as the new VC on January 7.
Invoking the vision of inclusion, nobility and excellence of BHU founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya dating back more than a century, Professor Jain in a message to the campus community on Friday called for a “culture of mentorship, inclusivity, transparency, collegiality and mutual respect”. He called upon the BHU faculty and staff to “step up individually, collectively and collaboratively at this time” to realize the potential and promise of the University. “The top priorities of our faculty and my administration,” he said in his message.
Prof. Jain thanked the Rector of BHU, Prof. VK Shukla, who has been acting as the Acting Vice-Chancellor for the last nearly ten months for his services and contribution in BHU.
Prof. Jain recently served as the founding director of Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar for 12 years. He was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for distinguished service in the field of science and engineering by the Government of India in 2020.

Dr. Jain has made significant contributions to earthquake engineering practice and education in India. He was instrumental in the development of several important seismic codes in India and has trained thousands of professional engineers and college teachers in earthquake engineering through his continuing education programs.
He established the National Informatics Center for Earthquake Engineering (NICE) at IIT Kanpur and developed the National Program on Earthquake Engineering Education (NPEEE) supported by the Government of India. He has served as a consultant for several major projects such as bridges and petrochemical pipelines, and has published over 150 scholarly papers. His research interests include the study of catastrophic earthquakes, reinforced concrete buildings, bridges and seismic codes.
Dr Jain was on the faculty of IIT Kanpur for 35 years from 1984-2019. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Roorkee (1979) and his Masters (1980) and Doctorate (1983) from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.
