‘Discussion with farmers is not new, my government spoke to them too’: Amarinder’s first attack on Punjab CM

After the Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi Talking to farmers about three new agriculture laws they have been opposing for over a year, former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh called Channi’s effort “false promises”. Channi is likely to be his first attack, the Captain said, adding that discussions with farmers were nothing new and that his government was also holding regular talks with farmers on the issue.

On Saturday, Channi tweeted a video of Kisan Union leader Balbir Singh Rajewal talking to him over the phone. “Today, I spoke to Balbir Singh Rajewal ji, leader of the farmers’ union and discussed about the three agricultural laws imposed on us by the Indian government.”

In response, Amarinder, through his media advisor Raveen Thukral, asked Channi not to “mislead farmers with false promises”. “‘My government did all this @CHARNJITCHNNI. We talked to farmer leaders on #FarmLaws and passed our own amendment laws in the assembly. Also. But the governor is sitting over him and he will sit on any new law. Please liars. Don’t mislead farmers with promises.’: @capt_amarinder (file pics)”

Amarinder’s reaction comes as a mild surprise as he has not spoken out against his replacement since his appointment in September. In fact, Amarinder had showered his blessings on Channi on social media and wished him the best for doing his best for the progress of Punjab.

In a politically strategic move, Channi had also visited his predecessor at his Siswan farmhouse. In Mohali on 14 October. The unscheduled meeting had fueled rumors of a “new political movement” in the Punjab Congress.

This was Channi’s first meeting with Amarinder Singh after becoming the CM. Channi along with his family had gone to meet Amarinder to seek blessings for his newly wed son and daughter-in-law.

On Saturday, the captain also denied anyone’s report. Back-channel talks with CongressIn a tweet through his media advisor, the Captain said that he will soon launch his party and after resolving the farmers’ issue, will hold talks with the BJP for seat-sharing.

Amarinder stepped down as Punjab chief minister last month, citing “insults” after an acrimonious power struggle with Punjab MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu.
