Chennai:
Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK is set to win rural local body elections in nine newly formed districts, which were created following administrative convenience and public demand.
DMK has won 45 out of 153 Zilla Panchayat ward member seats and is leading in most of the remaining seats.
It has won 645 out of 1,421 panchayat union ward member seats and is leading in most of the remaining seats.
The counting of votes, which began at 8 am on Tuesday, is likely to end at around 1 pm today.
These elections have been delayed by more than two years.
Voting for urban bodies is likely to be held by the end of this year.
This is the first election since Chief Minister MK Stalin’s DMK government came to power in May – after a landslide victory over the AIADMK-BJP alliance – and the extremely one-sided results are being seen as a major setback for opposition parties, including actor Kamal. Is. Hassan MNM.
Mr Stalin thanked voters for the result and called it support for the first five months of his party’s government. “We will work even harder… to protect people’s faith in us. Goodwill has grown for us in the last five months,” he said.
Among the more interesting results is 22-year-old Sarulata from Tenkasi district, who has become the youngest panchayat president by winning the Venkadampatti panchayat post.

Meanwhile, a BJP leader contesting from Coimbatore got just one vote and Twitter was flooded with jokes and memes with the hashtag #OneVoteBJP.
45 candidates who contested the (informally) elections under Tamil actor Vijay’s platform have claimed victory.
The DMK and its allies, including the Congress, registered a resounding victory over the AIADMK-BJP alliance in the April-May assembly elections held earlier this year.
DMK-Congress won 159 out of 234 seats and AIADMK-BJP 75 seats.
Kamal Haasan’s MNM failed to win a single seat and the actor himself lost in Coimbatore, where BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan emerged the winner.
