Mangaluru: Due to heavy rains, dilapidated school buildings have been damaged Dakshina Kannada Officials of the district administration and public education department have directed the school heads not to use them and make alternative arrangements.
In Dakshina Kannada, the DPI has identified 121 damaged schools across all its BEO jurisdictions. Sasikala, a case worker for the repair of the school, said there were 62 damaged schools in May, but it has doubled in two months. Most of these are in Puttur (26). Mangaluru Shahar (20), Bantwal (20) and Ullal (21).
The district administration has directed the DPI officials to give daily updates on the damage caused to the schools. These will be addressed through the State Disaster Response Fund. The maximum damage has been done to the ceiling, walls and floor.

Another government school near Kudupu is in poor condition. We have shifted some children to schools in Bikanerkatte thiruvel, In Pillar, a part of the school building has been damaged and children have moved to other classes. It is overcrowded but they are managing. ,
Prashant said that at Uchilagudde, near Ullal, the infrastructure of the school was damaged by rain water entering the building and it is risky to conduct classes until the water level recedes. A part of the DKZP Higher Primary School in Kenya collapsed two months ago. The dilapidated building was demolished. Presently, due to non-availability of classes, three classes have been shifted to the nearby madrassa.
BEOs of other jurisdictions told TOI that they have taken similar precautions. K Sudhakar, DDPI, DK, said that teachers have been instructed to avoid classes that pose a risk and conduct classes at safe places. Meanwhile, teachers and SDMC may declare holidays if classes are not held due to rain.
