,19 started spreading in India in early 2020, the daily domestic passenger was four lakh per day or 1.27 crore passengers per month. According to the minister, there were 3.5 lakh passengers on Sunday.
“All things being equal in the next two months, you should see us crossing the pre-COVID level in terms of daily commuters… the minister said at an event organized by All India Management Association (AIMA).
Last month, various airlines carried a total of 64 lakh passengers or an average of 2.1 lakh passengers per day. But it was 42% lower than the numbers seen before the spread of the Omicron version of the virus in December 2021, resulting in states imposing new restrictions on entry and forcing many travelers to cancel travel plans.
“In November, December, we started hitting 3.8 to 3.9 lakh passengers per day. We were almost back to pre-COVID levels… With Omicron, the number of passengers reduced… We dropped to 1.6 lakhs per day. So we had a contraction of around 65-70%,” said Mr. Scindia.
During the second wave of COVID-19 between March and May, there was a sharp drop in domestic traffic, but it continued to rise from June to January until consumer confidence returned.
