Dominic Thiem, 2020 champion, and Grand Slam title winners Venus Williams and Sofia Kenin were named as wild cards for the main draw of the US Open on Wednesday. The US Tennis Association announced the recipients ahead of the start of the final Grand Slam tournament of the year in New York on 29 August. Austrian Thiem, former world number three, now ranked 228, has returned to competition after a long layoff due to a wrist injury.

Williams, 42, has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, including one successive US Open title in 2000 and 2001. She returned to competition after missing almost a year due to injury.

His sister Serena, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion who turns 41 next month, has hinted at retiring after the US Open.

Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, is ranked fourth in the world but has recently returned from an injury layoff and is now ranked 412th.

US women’s wild cards include Coco Vandeweghe, Elizabeth Mandlik – daughter of 1985 US Open champion Hana Mandlikova – Peyton Stearns and Alina Yu, along with Kenin and Venus Williams.

The other women’s wild cards went to France’s Harmony Tan and Australian Jamie Forlis. The US men’s wild card included Sam Querrey, Emilio Nava, JJ Wolf, Ben Shelton and Lerner Tien. The other men’s wild cards went to France’s Yugo Humbert and Australian Rinki Hijikata.
