Industrialist Ratan Tata shook the automobile industry when he launched the Nano in 2008. Not only did the Nano become the “world’s cheapest car”, but it was also the culmination of Mr. Tata’s dream of offering car comfort and relative safety to users who can afford a two-wheeler.
Now, almost 14 years later, the Honorary Chairman of the Tata Group has taken a trip down the memory lane and shared on Instagram what inspired him to launch the Nano.
His Instagram post also has a picture of Mr Tata with Nano.
“What really inspired me, and aroused the desire to produce such a vehicle, was constantly seeing Indian families on scooters, perhaps with baby sandwiched between mother and father, wherever they were going. , often riding on slippery roads,” says Mr. Tata. in the post.
“At first we were trying to figure out how to make two wheelers safer, the doodle became four wheels, no windows, no doors, just a basic dune buggy. But I finally decided it had to be a car. Nano was always there for all our people,” he adds in Thursday’s post.
The emotional note has garnered over seven lakh likes in just four hours of being posted, with many users calling Mr Tata a “real gem” and an “inspiration for many”.
“Still remember your words (a promise is a promise),” commented one user.
Another said, “There is always an inspiration story to launch a car where a middle class people can drive their dreams home.”
The story of Nano is one of the most loved stories of the Indian auto industry. It was unveiled in January 2008 at the launch of a packed, near-Stampede.
The standard variant of the car was priced at Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom). In Delhi, after adding local fees, registration and insurance charges, the on-road price was Rs 1.20 lakh (a little over $2,500 then).
