Door-to-door campaign, focus on women voters: BJP president JP Nadda spells out Manipur elections 2022

Launching the campaign in Manipur ahead of the assembly elections in early 2022, BJP national president JP Nadda on Friday visited the state and gave the party a ‘new mantra’ to win the upcoming elections.

Sources with knowledge of the details told CNN News18 that Nadda has asked his party to campaign, but with a personal approach, focusing on door-to-door campaigning. “Go to the people, visit their homes, including those who have not come for any public rallies or functions, and understand from them what the grievances are,” Nadda told the party leaders in a closed room.

Nadda said, “If you meet them frequently and resolve their issues, soon they will be with you.” The party president also asked the Manipur state leadership to focus on women voters and reach out to the women of the state like the work done by the Modi government in this regard.

This is Nadda’s fourth visit to Manipur in the last three months.

The BJP unit in Manipur is already running a village-to-village campaign in which they reach out to the people through various programs and individual focus. This is a state where the BJP is seeking N Biren Singh for its second term as the party’s face. This time the party has set a target of winning 40 out of 60 seats and forming the government on its own with an absolute majority.

Heading the NDA government, Biren Singh formed the government in Manipur on March 15, 2017. However, it suffered a major setback in June 2020, when nine MLAs, including ministers, withdrew their support to the government, reducing it to a minority. Within a week, the intervention of the central leadership resulted in four NPP MLAs returning to the NDA, leading to the fall of the government.

Singh was successful in winning the trust vote, during which eight of the 24 Congress MLAs defied the party whip and abstained from voting. Thereafter Hey Henry Singh and six others resigned from the Congress.

Currently, the BJP-led NDA is in majority in the Assembly with 36 out of 60 seats – this includes 24 BJP MLAs and four each from the NPP and NDF, 1 of the LJP and three independents. Recently two MLAs – Rajkumar Imo Singh and Yumthong Haokip – joined the BJP in Delhi.
