Dr Anil K Rajvanshi, a Satara-based grassroot scientist working on sustainability and rural development, has been selected for the Padma Shri award in the Science and Engineering category. He is an academician, researcher with over three decades of work experience in renewable energy research, rural and sustainable development.
Dr Rajvanshi is known for the creation of Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI). It is a non-governmental organization and non-profit research and development institute in Maharashtra that conducts research in agriculture, renewable energy, sustainable development and animal husbandry.

Some of his work includes renewable energy based cooking and lighting; electricity generation from agricultural residues; Renewable fuel production from agriculture; electric cycle rickshaw; Water purification and wastewater treatment through the use of renewable energy.
He was born and brought up in Lucknow and did his schooling in 1966 from Indian School Certificate St Francis College, Lucknow. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from IIT Kanpur in 1972 and a master’s degree in 1974 from the same institute. He also earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida, USA in 1979.
Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur congratulated Rajvanshi. He took to Twitter and wrote, “I am happy to inform that Dr. Anil Rajvanshi, Director, Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute has been honored with the Padma Shri award announced by the government today on the eve of Republic Day.” “He has over 230 publications, seven patents and also several books. My heartiest congratulations for the well-recognized and best wishes for future endeavours,” the IIT director said.
He is the son of Jagdish Rajvanshi, a freedom fighter who was imprisoned during India’s freedom struggle. He also wrote a book about his prison experiences called ‘Halaat’.
This year President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the conferment of 128 Padma Awards. Out of these, 107 people will be awarded Padma Shri which is given for distinguished service in any field.
