Draupadi Murmu: A veteran Santal leader with many first names after her. All About NDA’s Presidential Candidate

There are many first names after the name of Draupadi Murmu. The BJP-led NDA on Tuesday selected her as its presidential candidate for the upcoming elections to be held on July 18, becoming the first tribal woman to be chosen as a candidate for India’s top constitutional post.

In 2015, when she was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, she became the first woman to hold the position. In doing so, she also became the first tribal woman to become the governor of her home state, Odisha.

Now, if she is elected president, she may be the first to be on track to achieve another milestone – a strong possibility as the numbers stand in favor of the NDA.

The NDA seems to have made a big political statement with its choice to focus on tribal communities, Murmu is a veteran tribal leader of the Santal ethnic group. The Santhals form the largest tribe in Jharkhand and are also present in Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and West Bengal.

Born on 20 June 1958 in Baidaposi village of Mayurbhanj district, Murmu started her political career in 1997 as councilor and vice-president of Rairangpur municipal body. In the same year, he was appointed as the vice-president of the ST Morcha of Odisha BJP.

In 2000, she became the MLA of Rairangpur when the BJP and the Biju Janata Dal formed a coalition government. Coming from a humble background, Murmu rose through the political ranks, battling poverty and personal tragedies in one of the most remote and underdeveloped districts of the country. But her zeal to serve the society broke down and she completed her education with BA from Ramadevi Mahila College, Bhubaneswar.

His rich political and administrative experience is reflected in his positions with the saffron party. From 2002-2009, she was a national executive member of the BJP’s ST Morcha.
