Draupadi Murmu, Odisha’s tribal leader, is the BJP-led NDA’s choice for the presidential election

The BJP Parliamentary Board on Tuesday announced former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu as the ruling NDA’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Addressing the media after holding an important meeting with the party’s top leaders, BJP National President JP Nadda said that for the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate.

Murmu (64), the former Jharkhand governor, will be the first tribal woman to hold the top constitutional post if elected, with a strong possibility that the numbers have stacked in favor of the BJP-led NDA. Murmu is the first woman governor of Jharkhand and the first woman and tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed governor of a state.

Addressing the media, Nadda said, “For the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. We declare Draupadi Murmu as NDA’s candidate for the upcoming Presidential election.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Murmu and said that he was confident that “she will be a great President of our country”. “Mrs. Draupadi Murmu ji has dedicated her life to the service of the society and to empower the poor, downtrodden as well as marginalized people. She has rich administrative experience and her tenure has been excellent. I believe that She will be a great President of our country.”

In another tweet, he said, “Millions of people, especially those who have experienced poverty and faced hardships, draw a lot of strength from the life of Mrs. Draupadi Murmu ji. Her understanding and compassionate nature of policy matters. Our country will benefit a lot.

Opposition’s Choice

Former Union minister Yashwant Sinha will be the unanimous presidential candidate of several opposition parties including Congress, TMC and Samajwadi Party, the parties said in a joint statement on Tuesday. Opposition leaders who gathered at the Parliament House for a meeting called by NCP chief Sharad Pawar to decide on a unanimous candidate for the presidential election, unanimously agreed on Sinha’s name.

“In his long and distinguished career in public life, Shri Yashwant Sinha has served the nation in various capacities – as an able administrator, efficient parliamentarian and acclaimed Union Minister of Finance and External Affairs. He is also the leader of the secular and democratic character of the Republic of India and Remarkably qualified to uphold its constitutional values,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a joint statement after the meeting.

Ramesh said the opposition parties have appealed to all parties to support Yashwant Sinha as the President so that a deserving ‘President’ can be elected unopposed in the country.

Sinha’s name came after Pawar, Gopalkrishna Gandhi and Farooq Abdullah were out of the race.

Voting is scheduled for July 18. Presidential elections are conducted indirectly through an electoral college consisting of elected members of parliament and assemblies of states and union territories. In an electoral college of around 10.86 lakh votes, the BJP-led alliance is estimated to have over 48 per cent of the vote and is expected to be supported by the Non-Aligned Regional Parties.
