Coimbatore: A 21-year-old daily wage laborer was arrested on Thursday after a bike that he was riding on a scooter in an inebriated condition killed a 29-year-old female passenger on Aranmanaipudur-S Mettupalayam road on Wednesday night.
Kinathukadavu police said the incident took place when Maithili, wife of Satheeshkumar of Sulakkal village, was going to a grocery shop in S Mettupalayam on her scooter along with her 80-year-old grandmother R Muthammal.
“While they were traveling on the Aranmanaipudur-S Mettupalayam road, a speeding motorcycle coming from the opposite direction rammed the scooter. Both Maithili and her grandmother were thrown from the vehicle and Maithili suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to the Government Hospital in Pollachi, where doctors declared him brought dead,” a police officer told TOI.
They said Muthammal was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital with a fracture in his right leg.
M Stalin Selvinraja, a resident of Aranmanaipudur, was riding the bike, the official said. He injured his left knee and was admitted to the government hospital.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Stalin was drunk and recklessly riding his bike. The Kinathukadavu police registered a case against Stalin under sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and 185 (driving by a drunken person or under the influence of drugs) of the Motor Vehicles Act. and arrested him on Thursday.
He was produced in a local court, which sent him to judicial custody the same day.
Meanwhile, District Superintendent of Police S Selvanagarathinam warned that those involved in fatal accidents under the influence of alcohol would be arrested and jailed for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
