No decision has been taken on the two applications, the official said on condition of anonymity

Mumbai’s civic body on Friday said it had received applications from Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde factions to “book” the sprawling Shivaji Park for the Dussehra rally. The rally, possibly the most important event in the Shiv Sena’s political calendar, has been taking place for several decades, but this time there are two contenders because of a split in the army following a rebellion by Chief Minister Shinde in June.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said, “We received two applications last month for booking Shivaji Park for the Dussehra rally. The first application was from the Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena on August 22 and the other from the Shinde group just before the Ganesh festival.” The official told PTI. The official said on condition of anonymity that no decision has been taken on both the applications.

Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray had said that his party would hold a Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park as before, while his son and former minister Aaditya Thackeray alleged that the party’s application for the rally was facing hurdles from the authorities. . The first Dussehra rally was held in 1966 and was addressed by the late Bal Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena, whose fiery speeches have since come to characterize the event. It is attended by party workers from across the state.
