The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the assessment year 2022-23 was July 31. Those filing returns after the due date will have to get their ITR verified at the earliest as the deadline for late filers has been reduced from August 1. The department issued a notification on July 29 announcing the change in the deadline.
Why e-verification of ITR is necessary?
E-verification of an ITR completes the return filing process and if it is not done within the stipulated time, an ITR is considered invalid.
The Income Tax Department has reduced the time limit for submission of hard copy of E-Verification or ITR-V after filing of returns by taxpayers to 30 days from the existing 120 days, starting August 1.
Deadline for verification of ITR filed before July 31
Verification deadline for returns filed before July 31 ITR 120 days from the date of filing. However, for filing returns on or after August 1, the tax department has reduced it to 30 days from the date of filing.
Till now, after filing of Income Tax Return (ITR), the time period to e-verify ITR or send ITR-V through post was 120 days from the date of uploading of ITR.

You can e-verify your ITR through the Electronic Verification Code (EVC) option. You can log on to the e-filing portal, use your Aadhaar number to generate OTP to complete the process. On successful verification, the return filing acknowledgment can be downloaded from the e-filing portal as a proof of completion of the income tax return filing process.
offline verification
Those who wish to send ITR-V in hard copy may send it through “Speed Post Only” through the usual address: Centralized Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru-560500, Karnataka.
“The date of dispatch of speed post duly attested ITR-V shall be reckoned for the purpose of determination for a period of 30 days from the date of transmission of income tax return electronically,” it said.
The notification clarified that if the e-verification or hard copy of ITR ITR-V is sent through post beyond the time limit of 30 days, the return will be treated as late or beyond the due date.
