The commission noted that the MLAs supporting Eknath Shinde got about 76 per cent votes in favor of Shiv Sena’s 55 winning candidates in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Election Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday said the decision of the Commission of India to recognize the Eknath Shinde faction as the original Shiv Sena was as expected.
Chavan told PTI that the EC considered legislative and parliamentary majority. “It was expected that the election body would rule in a particular way to help the ruling party,” he said.
He said that Uddhav Thackeray should approach the appropriate appellate court against the decision of the Election Commission as he enjoys wide support at the district and taluka level.
As it ordered the allotment of the Shiv Sena’s “bow and arrow” election symbol to the Shinde-led group, the Election Commission allowed the Uddhav Thackeray faction to be allotted the “flaming torch” symbol till the completion of the assembly bypolls in the state. ,

The three-member commission said in a unanimous order that the MLAs of the Uddhav Thackeray faction got 23.5 per cent votes in favor of the victorious Shiv Sena candidates.
