As the Enforcement Directorate (ED) prepares to question TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee in the coal smuggling case, the party launched an all-out attack on the BJP and central agencies with the hashtag ‘#PuppetsofBJP’ on social media.
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday appeared before the ED in connection with its probe in the coal smuggling case. Abhishek, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reached the agency’s office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake near Kolkata at around 11 am.
The campaign began with a tweet by Abhishek Banerjee when he tweeted from his Kalighat residence: “It is a matter of great shame that central agencies have been reduced to #PuppetsOfBJP.”
“Whenever the BJP feels threatened, they impose these ‘parrots’ on those who have not sold their backbone or integrity!” He further said on the microblogging platform.
After that, within 30 minutes, three tweets came from TMC, in which all senior ministers and leaders were posting on the matter.
TMC MLA Nayana Bandopadhai said, “@dir_ed to harass the opposition & trusting CBI doesn’t hide your incompetence, @BJP4India. We will keep fighting evil forces, and #PuppetsOfBJP don’t scare us! ED and CBI – two new #PuppetsOfBJP!”
TMC leader Moloy Ghatak, who is under ED’s target, said in a tweet, “Unable to win elections or people’s hearts, PM @narendramodi embarrass the nation, harass opposition leaders and creates unnecessary chaos. this is so embarrassing. Strongly condemn the partisan attitude of ED and CBI.
Responding to the party’s allegations, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya rubbished all the allegations. “If it is political vendetta, they have every right to go to court. BJP has nothing to do with it.”
Delivering his speech at the TMC Foundation Day event on Monday, Abhishek Banerjee called the coal and cattle smuggling scams in the state a “home ministry scam” and directly blamed Home Minister Amit Shah as its beneficiary.

The ED summons reached Abhishek within 24 hours of making the public statement, asking him to appear for the exam on Friday.
Abhishek is likely to be questioned by the ED in the following cases:
Fresh clues were gathered by the agency during its search operation and investigation of suspects on coal smuggling operations and money trail modalities in the last few months. The agency will try to probe whether Abhishek had any involvement in the matter.

On the other hand, ED sources say that they want to ascertain the possibility of Abhishek’s involvement with the statements collected by the agency by questioning senior state IPS officers in Delhi in the last week of August.
– Cross-check and verify the documents related to the money trail in the coal scam, which Abhishek has been asked to take with him today.
– Verify Abhishek’s knowledge about traces of money from illegal coal mining proceeds made by absconding TMC leader Vinay Mishra, his arrested brother Vikas Mishra and scam kingpin Anup Majhi.
