Elderly couple found dead in Kolkata flat; stock market angle questionable

Kolkata Double Murder: Police suspect that someone close to the victims killed them.

Kolkata:

An elderly Gujarati couple was found dead in a south Kolkata neighborhood in an incident of alleged double murder, which may have links to the stock market, police said.

The deceased have been identified as 60-year-old Ashok Shah and his 55-year-old wife Reshmi Shah. Police said that the woman’s shoulder has been found with deep injury marks.

Their bodies were found soaked in blood near West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in her flat in Bhabnipur area, which is a high security area.

Police suspect that someone close to the victims killed them.

“The circumstantial evidence indicates that the people visiting her house knew her and the woman may have opened the door,” news agency PTI quoted the officer as saying.

Sources said gunshots were also heard from inside the house. A bullet shell has been recovered from the house.

The officer said the police are trying to ascertain whether the couple had taken a loan to invest in the stock market.

Meanwhile, local reports citing preliminary investigations suggested that the couple had an argument with a potential buyer of their home a few days back.

The police have checked the mobile phones and call logs of the victims.

City Mayor Firhad Hakim and top officials of Kolkata Police have visited the spot. Police also used sniffer dogs for the search.

Further investigation is on.
