A septuagenarian couple has welcomed their first child after 54 years of marriage in Alwar, Rajasthan. Gopi Singh and Chandravati had their first child through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) technology. The elderly couple came to know about IVF fertility service from a relative. She approached the only center available in Alwar, with the hope of conceiving. The third attempt was successful and the couple welcomed a baby boy.
“There are only a few cases of babies being born at this age across the country. This is probably the first case in Rajasthan when a 75-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman have had a child,” Dr Pankaj Gupta told IANS. Due to the age of the mother, the doctors were worried about the delivery but it all went smoothly and Chandravati gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
The couple was very happy after becoming parents after so many years. Singh, an army veteran from the Bangladesh War, was his father’s only son. He was shot in the leg, after which he retired 40 years ago. Singh expressed happiness saying that now after his death his dynasty will not end.
Dr Gupta mentioned that the government passed a law prohibiting IVF centers to entertain customers above 50 years of age. The elderly couple were lucky as they had approached the Center before the law came into force.
IVF technology has proved to be a boon for those who are unable to conceive. Eggs and sperm are cultured in a laboratory under careful monitoring and stimulation. When the embryo develops, it is medically placed in the woman’s womb. The embryo then gets a biological environment to develop into a baby. The baby is delivered naturally, or in some cases, through a caesarean operation, depending on the health conditions of the mother.
