Elon Musk and John Elkann agree Ferrari should not make self-driving cars

Elkan and Musk were surprised to see the recent shift away from nuclear power, a side effect of the Fukushima incident.

Italian Tech Week was pretty star-studded, with John Elkann, Stelantis shareholder, CEO of Xor, the holding company behind Ferrari, and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, joining the stage. He talked with Autopilot about a range of things Musk talked about, including autonomous vehicle technology. But both agreed on one thing that Ferrari should not get into the self-driving game.

Alcan, who was recently Ferrari’s interim CEO following the sudden retirement of Louis Camilleri, agreed that Ferrari would not develop self-driving technology. Elkan attended the conference via video conference.

“The essence of being a Ferrari is to drive it,” said Elkan. “It’s on the logo,” Musk added, moving the horse motif.

Both CEOs also agreed that nuclear power could be a long-term solution along with solar power. Musk even said that nuclear power was quite safe, something that even Bill Gates has been doing for a few years.
