Elon Musk tweeted that he is in talks with airlines to set up Starlink broadband

Billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet on Thursday that he was in talks with airlines about setting up Starlink, a satellite-based broadband service owned by his rocket company SpaceX.

Musk, who is known for his Twitter jokes, announcements and lively conversations with followers, did not give any details about the conversation in his tweet. Actually, this tweet was a reply to his original tweet. It was not immediately clear which airlines were contacted or when the installation would take place.

“Yes, we are talking to airlines about installing Starlink. Please let them know if you want it on your airliner.

Shares of in-flight Internet provider Gogo Inc fell as low as 5.7% in afternoon trading before recouping some losses.

SpaceX’s satellite internet arm Starlink plans to deploy 12,000 satellites. SpaceX has said that the Starlink constellation will cost about $10 billion.

It is one of a growing number of small satellite companies that also include Amazon.com’s Kuiper, Britain’s OneWeb, venture capital-backed Planet and Raytheon Technologies Corp’s Blue Canyon Technologies.

Musk currently operates companies including electric-car maker Tesla Inc., rocket startup SpaceX and Neuralink, a startup developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect human brains to computers.

Musk, with a net worth of $213 billion, has overtaken Jeff Bezos of Amazon to become the world’s richest person yet again.

The Tesla founder has amassed nearly $13 billion in assets over the past week as the electric vehicle maker’s stock price soared.

Meanwhile, SpaceX’s Starlink aims to launch broadband service in India by December 2022, with 2 lakh active terminals subject to the permission of the Indian government.

Starlink Country Director of India Sanjay Bhargava said in his social media post that pre-orders from India have crossed 5,000 and the company is keen to work in rural areas to provide broadband services.

“Our target is to activate 2,00,000 terminals in India by December 2022. The actual number may be much less or even zero if we do not get government approval but it is very unlikely that we will exceed 2,00,000 Will go.” Bhargava said.

Company USD 99 or . is charging the deposit amount of 7,350 per subscriber and claims to deliver data speeds in the range of 50 to 150 megabits per second in the beta phase.

The company’s services will compete with Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea in broadband and will be a direct competitor to Bharti Group-backed OneWeb.
