Ernakulam’s breathing eases as rain eases

The India Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rain during October 18 and 19, while heavy rains have been predicted in the next three days till October 22.

The coastal panchayat of Chellanam, which usually witnesses large-scale sea incursions, remained protected from rain and rough sea conditions. VT Sebastian, a resident of the village, said that Chelanam has not seen any problems so far and is hopeful that the situation will continue as sea conditions allow proper drainage from the interior areas.

Sources in the district administration said that there is no emergency in the district. Three relief camps have been opened in Muvattupuzha, Kochi and Aluva taluks and officials of the revenue department have been ordered to make arrangements for rehabilitation of the people, if required. An official said that in keeping with the COVID-19 protocol, camps were arranged for temporary rehabilitation in all taluks. The arrangement has been made keeping in view the possibility of opening the shutters of the Idukki and Admalayar dams to flush out the excess water.

A unit of the National Disaster Relief Force has been deployed in Ernakulam district. An official communication said the unit has so far rescued 49 people in Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta districts.

According to the district administration, there are 44 local bodies, including panchayats and municipalities, which are directly vulnerable to the alarming rise in the water level in the Periyar river.

Meanwhile, IMD data said the Kochi city area covering the Naval airport received 10.8 mm of rain till 8 am on Monday, while the Cochin International Airport area at Nedumbassery received 59.5 mm of rain till 8.30 am. Hui.
