The Union Agriculture Ministry on August 17 released the fourth advance estimate of production of major agricultural crops for 2021-22. The ministry said that the production of food grains in the country is estimated to be 315.72 million tonnes which is higher by 4.98 million tonnes as compared to 2020-21.
A government release said the production during 2021-22 is 25 million tonnes more than the average foodgrain production of the last five years (2016-17 to 2020-21). “Rice, maize, gram, pulses, rapeseed and mustard, oilseeds and sugarcane are estimated to have record production,” it said. While foodgrain production is estimated at 315.72 million tonnes, rice production is expected to be 130.29 million tonnes, a record as per the Centre. The production of wheat may reach up to 106.84 million tonnes and for nutritive/coarse cereals it may be 50.90 million tonnes.
“The total production of rice during 2021-22 is estimated to be a record 130.29 million tonnes. This is higher by 13.85 million tonnes than the average production of 116.44 million tonnes of the last five years. Wheat production during 2021-22 is 106.84 million tonnes It is estimated to be 2.96 million tonnes higher than the average wheat production of 103.88 million tonnes for the last five years.
“The estimates of production of various crops are based on the data received from the states and validated with the information available from other sources,” the ministry said.
