Turmeric or turmeric is one such spice that has acquired the status of miracle food or ‘superfood’ in recent times. A natural healer, turmeric is loaded with antioxidant and health-benefiting properties. It is popularly consumed to boost immunity and ward off seasonal infections. Usually turmeric is consumed in the form of powdered spice which we buy in packet form. Powdered turmeric is easily available in our local markets and supermarkets. However, have you heard of a special variety of this spice known as Lakdong turmeric?
Lakadong Turmeric or ‘U Chyrmit Lakadong’ is a special spice that hails from the north-eastern state of Meghalaya. The name of this variety comes from its native region – Lakdong valley Area in the Jaintia Hills in the State. According to reports, it is also touted as one of the world’s finest turmeric and was exported in large quantities to countries like Netherlands and UK in the year 2021.
healing properties of Turmeric It is attributed to the presence of a compound called curcumin. Lakdong turmeric is said to have a curcumin content that is much higher than normal turmeric – about 7%. This means that it is more potent and offers more health benefits than our regular turmeric. It is available at State Emporium stores in Meghalaya across the country, such as ‘The Meghalayan Age’ in Delhi.

Lakdong farmers practice traditional methods of farming and do not use any fertilizers or pesticides while cultivating this Lakdong turmeric. Thus, turmeric is pure and organic. The black alluvial soil used for its cultivation is: Fertile, that it does not require any additional chemicals. Adequate rainfall and a laborious harvest process yield this wonderful spice that is dried, sorted and packaged for further processing.
