Townsend joined Everton on a free transfer in the summer window. This was his first league goal for the Toffees.
The 30-year-old credits this goal to his mother.
“I have to give a shout-out to my mother because during the week she sent me a compilation video of all my goals,” Townsend said after the match.
“He clipped them all together and he told me I needed to believe in myself again. I think you saw it here with that goal in mind.”
Everton have taken 10 points from their opening four league games under Benitez to move ahead with the top of local rivals Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.
“The players’ reaction, no matter what, the system was very good,” Benitez said after Everton’s return.
