It’s that time of year again when cities across India will light up to celebrate Diwali – the festival of lights! While the festivities are in the air, this period can be difficult for those who have asthma, other respiratory problems, and even those with heart disease. Diwali usually falls in late October, usually November and this year, it will be celebrated on 24 October. While this is the time when winter slowly begins, the air is also polluted, which is aggravated by the bursting of firecrackers during Diwali. This problem is especially acute for people living in Delhi-NCR and its surrounding areas. Sandeep Garg, Senior Consultant, Pulmonology & Sleep Medicine, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi, tells us how people suffering from respiratory ailments including asthma can ensure that their Diwali is a safe and happy one.

“Winters are worse for asthma patients because it causes breathing problems. In India, it corresponds to the festival of Diwali, which is celebrated across the country. The air is full of pollutants. Typical farms in winters fires that are particularly felt in Delhi and surrounding areas. The widespread use of firecrackers leads to asthma, several lung disorders, several coronary diseases and cardiovascular problems – all of which are toxic, polluted air. Usually, during this period, the air pollutant takes a deep dip. So it is important to take care of yourself,” Dr. Garg said.

Diwali 2022: Advice for asthma patients and people with respiratory problems

As Dr Garg explains, people face difficulty in breathing and the existing problems get aggravated. People with asthma and other respiratory ailments should ensure the following steps, suggested the doctor:

1) Visit your doctor regularly to monitor your asthma and avoid exacerbations.
2) Continue to use your regular inhaler and the medicines prescribed by your doctor.
3) People should avoid going out during high fever. If they cannot avoid going out, they should wear N95 masks.
4) Eat lots of green vegetables and fruits and increase your intake of antioxidants to reduce the effects of pollution.
5) Avoid morning walks as the pollution level is at an alarming level during that time.
6) Do not self-medicate. If it gets worse, go to the doctor.
7) Drink lots of water and keep yourself hydrated.

Sandeep Garg advised that people should strictly follow the treatment protocol. He said that asthma should not be a burden and if managed properly, people can have a happy and safe Diwali!
