Ahead of the result day of March 10, exit polls have predicted a victory for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. There are total 117 assembly constituencies in the bordering state while the halfway mark is 59.

Most exit polls are predicting that Kejriwal’s party is all set to form the government.

Now if this really happens then it will be a big deal for the party. AAP is already in power in Delhi, and winning in Punjab will improve your chances of getting a national party status granted by the Election Commission.

How does a party get the status of a national party?

A political party can get the status of a national party as per the rules laid down by the Election Commission.

The first step for a political party to progress to a national party is that it has to achieve ‘State Party’ status in at least 4 states, which is also accepted by the Election Commission.

To get the status of a state party, a political front must satisfy one of the following criteria.

  • A party should get 8 percent of the total vote share in the state assembly elections.
  • A party must get 6 percent vote share and win at least 2 seats.
  • A party must obtain at least 3 percent vote share and win at least 3 seats.

If a political party meets any of the above criteria, it will get the status of a state party.

And if a party gets the state party tag in 4 different states, then it will be considered as a national party.

Now for AAP, which is already in power in Delhi for two consecutive terms, a victory in Punjab will put it closer to becoming a national party.

Also, it has contested elections in Goa, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Therefore, the results of the recent elections are going to be very important for the Aam Aadmi Party with respect to its national party status.

In Delhi Assembly Elections 2020, AAP registered a landslide victory by winning 62 seats out of total 70.
