Amid the spike in Covid-19 cases across Delhi, the national capital has also seen a surge in seasonal flu cases recently. Apart from seasonal flu, cases of dengue and chikungunya have also increased rapidly in the city. In the last 24 hours, the metropolis has recorded 1,652 new active cases and eight deaths. The symptoms of seasonal flu and COVID-19 are similar, leaving many confused. However, recently Dr. Vini Kantro, Pulmonologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi has addressed this concern.
Speaking to News Nine, Dr Kantru said that many patients are dismissing fever, cough and cold as seasonal flu. He then recommended that the best way to take precautionary measures is to test for COVID-19 because the symptoms of seasonal flu are almost identical to those of the coronavirus. Dr Kantro said both diseases are upper respiratory infections and people with comorbidities are at higher risk for both diseases.
If compared, the impact and transmission potential of vector-borne monsoon fever and COVID-19 are completely different. However, there are some similarities in the symptoms of both the diseases. The diseases that occur during the monsoon season are characterized by high fever, fatigue, and joint and muscle pain, which are also signs of Kovid-19. Both COVID and common cold are respiratory diseases that include sore throat, cough, fever, body aches and more.
Amid rising COVID-19 cases, health experts have asked people to take precautionary measures and get tested in case of any symptoms. Dr Kantro also mentioned that COVID-19 can also be identified as it comes in clusters. “Therefore, if you are Covid-19 positive, it is expected that most of the family members or people around you will also show symptoms,” she said.
He further added that the existing variants BA.2.75 and BA.5 may still have mild infection in people. On the other hand, people are quite immune to seasonal diseases as these diseases come every year.
