With thousands of Indian medical students forced to return home from war-torn Ukraine, their future now faces uncertainty. While the parents of many of these students and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have urged the government to make a provision for one-time adjustments in Indian medical colleges, many experts were of the view that this may not be a practical possibility. Is.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Lt Gen (Retd) Dr Madhuri Kanitkar, Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, said that students returning from Ukraine cannot be automatically accommodated in Indian medical colleges.
He said that Indian colleges require a certain qualification and the admission standard cannot be lowered for anyone. The students returning from Ukraine are from universities that have very different teaching practices and curricula, however, government officials were looking for ways to allow these students to continue their education until they had a chance to return to Ukraine. .
“Any decision to rehabilitate or help students cannot be made in isolation by universities. The National Medical Commission is looking into the ways and means to address this issue,” Dr Kanitkar had said.
MUHS is compiling the data of returning students and more than 100 students have already registered on the institution’s portal. Due to the low cost of medical education, Ukraine is one of the most preferred destinations for Indian students. About 24 percent of the foreign students in Ukraine’s medical colleges are from India.
However, after the Russian attack on Ukraine last month, thousands of these students had to leave their studies midway and return to India. As part of the Indian government’s Operation Ganga, more than 16,000 Indian students have already been repatriated from Ukraine and efforts are on to rescue the rest. On Thursday, Indian authorities rescued more than 600 students trapped in the Ukrainian city of Sumy.
