Vehicular movement was disrupted on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Saturday morning due to unusually heavy rush of passengers from Mumbai to popular destinations like Sunder Lonavala-Khandala, Pune and Mahabaleshwar and Goa. The rush was mainly attributed to the extended weekend. It took eight hours on Saturday to travel about 148 km from Mumbai to Pune via the expressway. The typical journey time is three and a half hours. The situation was particularly bad on the stretches between Khalapur and Lonavala. Long queues of four wheeler, light commercial and heavy vehicles were seen in several lanes while slowly moving towards Pune from Mumbai. The same is true for Mumbai-bound vehicles between Lonavala and Khandala.
