Crash means Verstappen has a 5 point lead over Hamilton so far this season

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen again crashed at Monza which resulted in both drivers retiring from the Italian GP. The incident happened after a first-round pit stop in which Verstappen had a terrifying 11-second pitstop that resulted in him falling behind Hamilton. But Hamilton himself had a slow stop of 4.2 seconds, which resulted in him coming out with Verstappen. He was naturally desperate to outdo his main world championship rival, colliding with the 7-time world champion in the first place. Neither Yield Quarter nor Verstappen’s car crashed into the sausage curve and jumped over Hamilton’s car.

Hamilton was lucky enough to come out without damage as the halo protected him from Red Bull tyres. It was Hamilton’s first retirement in 3 years since the Austrian GP in 2018, underlying his consistency that made him the most successful driver of all time. Verstappen and Red Bull, who were expected to lose points in the race due to the Mercedes power advantage inherent in the long straights at Monza, retained a 5 point lead over the world champions.

Ricciardo overtook Verstappen at the start of the race

Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez finished P5, while Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas managed P3 after storming from the back of the grid. This meant that Mercedes increased their advantage over Red Bull in the constructors’ championship to 16 points. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner considered it a racing incident, while Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was coercive and indicated he would accept any decision from the stewards.

Regardless, the incident is sure to stir things up as it intensifies a heated argument between the two drivers and the two teams following the crash at Silverstone. Subsequently, Red Bull unsuccessfully lobbied to have Hamilton banned for some races. This time, thankfully, there is not that much bitterness about the incident.
