Max Verstappen initially overtook Charles Leclerc in the early stages of the race to take the lead of Carlos Sainz and the Miami GP, and won for Red Bull despite a late challenge from Monegasque.
Drivers were given NFL helmets instead of hats when going to the podium.
After starting the race from third on the grid after a mistake in his final run in qualifying, Max Verstappen made a good launch from the line and took P2 from Carlos Sainz on turn 1. Charles Leclerc also landed well out of pole position, and as expected, drivers starting from the inside line struggled at the start, while drivers on the clean outside line landed very well. From then on, Max Verstappen set his target on the back of Charles Leclerc, and passed the Monegasque driver on lap 9.

Most of the race lacked action from here. Most of the grid opted to start the race on medium and then finish it on hard compound tyres, also removing any strategy play. Drivers who started the race on hard tyres lost in the early stages of the race due to lack of grip, but the late VSC/safety car period played into their hands as they could slow down the field and not give up. more time George Russell – being a driver who started on hard tyres – took advantage of this to convert his P12 into a qualifying P5 race. He started in P11, as both Aston Martin drivers started from the pitlane to avoid a penalty from the FIA due to a pre-race fuel temperature issue.

The VSC period, which turned into a full-fledged safety car, began with the coming together of Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris. Gasly’s front left slams past Norris, causing the McLaren driver’s tire to burst and resulting in both drivers being kicked out of the race. After the end of the safety car period, the race was revived. Charles Leclerc gave his all during the closing stages of the race, but failed to catch Verstappen, who did enough to stop any attempts by the Ferrari driver. In the closing stages the two Germans on the grid – Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher – came closer together, robbing him of any chances of points, as Vettel had to retire his car and Schumacher had to pit for a new wing. .

Sergio Pérez took advantage of the safety car stoppage for a new set of mediums in his attempt to pass two Ferraris in front of him, but he could not win the fight with Sainz for the final podium place and finished fourth. Bottas, starting in P5, continued to hold the position for a long time, until a late wave saw both Mercedes cars pass him, pushing him down to 7th.
After a poor start on hard tyres, Mercedes’ George Russell fell to 15th place, but did well to fix and pass several cars along the way, until a lucky VSC meant he was in P7. From there he battled Hamilton during the closing stages of the race and brought home a P5 finish. He is now the only driver to have finished every race in the top 5 this season.
Alex Albon also delivered on the car’s pace, which he believed had been present since the start of the weekend, but a poor qualification meant he was starting at the back of the grid. Just two races after pulling off a tire management masterclass in Australia by going the entire race distance minus 1 lap on a set of hard tires to achieve the final point, Albon again took a well-deserved time to bring the car home in P10. Managed race. He was promoted to P9 as Fernando Alonso received 2 penalties for colliding with Gasly and leaving the track and taking advantage. Despite starting the race from the pit lane, Lance Stroll converted his hard tire start into a point-scoring finish.
0 notes
Verstappen won the race and Perez finished in P4, with Red Bull and Verstappen moving closer to Ferrari and Leclerc in the championship, as the car development game continued. With the recent upgrades to the W13, Mercedes is also looking to be ahead of the class of the midfield, and may soon make repeated appearances at the podium, if not a title challenge.
