Ex-Facebook Inc. The product manager, who claimed the discovery of the benefits of social networks harmed the mental health of young users, has been asked to share his findings with UK and EU lawmakers.
According to a government statement, whistleblower Frances Hogen will give evidence to a parliamentary committee examining the UK’s draft online security bill on October 25 and will also share her views on how to regulate social media.
“There is a need for greater transparency when decisions are made by companies like Facebook when they trade user security for user safety,” Damien Collins, a Conservative member of parliament and chairman of the committee, said in the statement.
Haugen has also been invited to give evidence to EU parliament lawmakers at a November 8 hearing on whistle-blowers.
Anna Cavazzini, chair of the EU Assembly’s internal markets committee, said in a statement that “people like Haugen “show the urgent need to set democratic rules for the online world in the interest of users.”
