A 36-year-old man was shot dead during a clash between rival supporters of the same club before a second division match in Argentina. Witnesses said the clash took place on Monday night between supporters of Club Atlético de San Martín in the northwestern city of San Miguel de Tucumán. Police sources quoted by the official Telam news agency said fans were on their way to the stadium to top the table against Belgrano. San Martín president Rubén Moisello said the victim was shot in the neck from behind.
Police cordoned off the area after the incident but the match went ahead with a 1–0 win over San Martín.
A murder investigation is opened and Tukuman’s deputy police chief Juan Ibanez said that “the perpetrator has already been identified.”
Also on Monday night, about 15 people were arrested and three police were injured as angry fans of Second Division Nueva Chicago tried to break into the changing room after their team’s 3–2 loss to Almagro. According to the NGO Salvemos al Ftbol (Let’s Save Football), more than 300 deaths have occurred in violent clashes inside and outside stadiums since Argentine football turned professional in the 1930s.
