Binotto refrains from judging Masi’s decision

Michael Massey hasn’t made many friends in F1 since becoming race director following the sudden death of Charlie Whiting. In 2021, things were tough and heated due to a tight fight between Verstappen and Hamilton. Toto Wolff and Christian Horner always had something to complain about, culminating in the last lap drama with the safety car, where Verstappen steered Hamilton to a shocking World Championship victory. Mercedes has since appealed the decision to only withdraw it but came out with tougher statements.

But one person who doesn’t criticize Masi is Ferraro team boss Mattia Binotto. He believed it was such a difficult situation that there would always be a party that would be extremely unhappy.

On what happened in Abu Dhabi, I think whatever decision he took, I see someone who will be happy, someone who will be sad. I think his job was the hardest job on the planet at the time. For everyone, it is important that lessons be learned, if any,” Binotto said.

“I see what could be important within the F1 Commission. We discussed all the events and situations and identified if there are any improvements that we can make for the future. This is the mandate of the World Council, which is the most important is,” the Ferrari boss added.

Binotto refrained from judging the decision made by Masi, even though his driver Carlos Sainz Jr. had questioned what had happened on the last lap in relation to the un-lapping of the lapped cars.

“As for Ferrari, again, all the other team principles, the FIA, are very happy to sit down with F1 to discuss whether something could be done differently. It would be wrong on my part to judge the decisions because I believe, again, it was a very tough call,” he said.
